Under the winning project „Roman ruins of Hévíz – rehabilitating the green areas and increasing touristic attractiveness” being realized within the framework of the investment aiming to make the ruin garden presentable, the Local Government of Hévíz improved the environment of the Roman ruins in Attila Street in the period between November 2010 and November 2011.
An essential element of the construction activity was the costruction and renovation of green areas, and the placement of a work of art in the area of the Roman villa. Since the construction was carried out in a historic area, special authorization procedure had to be conducted for work processes involving earthworks.
A new trail was built to the public utilities of the public toilets -, which are automated and can also be used by the disabled, - by the expansion of the water supply and sewerage network, and at the same time, the area’s rainwater drainage was resolved as well. It became possible to have a stereoscopic view of the ruins by constructing a platform. The total surface of the walkway with antique pavers is 502 m2. In addition to an EU standard playground, an open-air theatre, a roofed bicycle storage and bicycle racks were also built.
The unique image, described in the project, is presented by sculptor Lajos Orr’s artwork, which forms a gateway typical of the age. The sculpture is made special by a black marble statue of a dog who keeps its eyes skinned as it were guarding the area.
By means of this project, the area becomes suitable for organising festivals, tours, and fairs. The environment designed in a family-friendly way is also attentive to the youngest age group’s interest. It is suitable for disabled people as well.
